Biographer
speaks about "Cosmic Scholar," his book on artist and Grammy-awarded musicologist
Harry Smith.
Harry
Smith grew up in Depression-era Anacortes and Bellingham, where — realizing he
resided in the homeland of the Lummi, Samish, and Swinomish Peoples — he began
studying their languages, histories and cultures. As a teenager, he made
collections, drawings, photographs and recordings of Coast Salish artifacts and
lifeways, some of which are in museum and tribal collections. Most significant
to the Samish Indian Nation is the repatriated house post that originally stood
at New Village on Guemes Island (Qweng7qwengila7).
