Description

The Natural Resources Manager provides field work oversight for the Samish Indian Nation Natural Resources Department. Responsibilities include managing and developing technical staff, ensuring grant deliverables are met and coordinating field and reporting activities within the department. This position reports to and works closely with the Natural Resources Senior Director a to ensure successful operation and growth of the Natural Resources Department.

Principle Duties
  1. Manages field staff to ensure quality project planning, field work implementation, data -entry, data-analysis, quality assurance and reporting across Samish DNR projects
  2. Manages and provides guidance to other staff, interns or volunteers involved in field work assignments for the DNR department, checking accuracy of work, and offering positive and constructive feedback, as well as giving input to the Senior Director for performance management
  3. Takes appropriate action to correct or improve employee performance in the field, and works closely with Natural Resources Senior Director to follow up with more formally as needed
  4. Assists Senior Director in initiating, developing and maintaining productive relationships with project partners both within and outside the Samish Tribal Organization
  5. Tracks all grant deliverables and required reports and meets required deadlines for submittal
  6. Conducts field staff annual performance reviews with director input and works to continue the development of employee skills and qualifications
  7. Takes directions from the Senior Director and follows through with projects until completion with little or no supervision
  8. Performs special studies in support of natural resources protection program efforts
  9. Oversees field data collection, analysis and reporting across all projects
  10. Provides data compilation analysis and report construction
  11. Maintains field supplies and equipment inventories to ensure ample supplies and the equipment is in good working order or repaired as needed
  12. Works independently and accurately in an area of frequent interruptions and as part of a multi-tasked environment
  13. Writes reports and assists with researching grant opportunities and grant writing and management
  14. Performs other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications
  1. Must possess a Bachelor’s Degree in Natural Resources or related studies with 5 years of relevant experience in the field required; related experience can be considered a substitute for education
  2. Must demonstrate experience and knowledge of current ecosystem and critical habitat issues with a working knowledge of climate issues and how they relate to a changing environment
  3. Must possess leadership qualities to produce positive results with funding agencies, project partners and Samish Natural Resources Staff
  4. Must be proficient in Microsoft Office programs, database development and maintenance in MS Access or similar relational database software
  5. Must possess ability to communicate information verbally and in written form in clear, concise, accurate and professional manner
  6. Must have excellent record-keeping and organizational skills to assure timely and accurate submission of reports, grant requests, budgets, and other time-sensitive materials
  7. Initiate and maintain positive, respectful working relationships with Tribal staff to foster a team environment. Initiate and maintain positive working relationships with all outside organizations
  8. Possesses a cooperative attitude and a professional manner
  9. Must be able to maintain confidentiality of information received orally, through data collection or in document handling
  10. Must have a valid driver’s license and be able to meet the minimum insurance requirements regarding driving record in order to utilize GSA vehicles
  11. Must have valid WA Boaters Certification and have completed the U.S. Power Squadron training or equivalent within the first six months of employment
  12. Must be able to meet the physical demands of active field work
  13. Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds
Working Conditions

Physical Demands: Frequent walking, hiking, standing (40% of time); Frequent bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, lifting, carrying, and pushing (30% of time); Regular periods of sitting, including driving (30% of time). Regularly lifts/carries up to 50lbs. Must possess manual dexterity sufficient to use office and field equipment with frequent repetitive motion such as writing, typing, paperwork-handling, and phone use. Must be able to physically utilize vehicles and water vessels of various sizes including boats, kayaks, or zodiacs. Mental/Visual Demands: Frequent mental and/or visual attention to task is required. Occasionally work requires heavy concentration. Frequent interruptions. Tasks involve eye-hand coordination. Working Environment: Work environment is mainly outdoors with various elements and inclement weather including wind, rain, sleet, cold, and heat. Unavoidable hazards/risks: Work requires frequent vehicular travel and frequent field work including land and bodies of water. May handle chemicals, solutions, and samples on a regular basis. Protective equipment and clothing may be required (goggles, gloves, masks, boots, PFDs, etc.)
