Description

The Natural Resources Technician provides general field support for the Samish Indian Nation Natural Resources Program. The Natural Resources Technician will report to the Natural Resources Manager and will work closely with project partners on Natural Resources issues as directed. The Department is tasked with preserving, enhancing, and restoring Natural Resources relevant to the Samish Tribe.

Principle Duties
  1. Takes direction and provides follow-through with projects until completion with little or no supervision
  2. Implements field data collection programs as directed by the Natural Resources Manager
  3. Performs special studies in support of Natural Resources protection program efforts
  4. Conducts field data collection with primary work in outdoor environments
  5. Calibrates and audits field equipment
  6. Maintains and repairs field supplies and equipment; inventories to ensure ample supplies and that all equipment is in good working order
  7. Organizes and cleans equipment as directed by the field supervisor in a timely manner upon return from the field to ensure that it is ready for next project
  8. Works independently and accurately in an area of frequent interruptions and as part of a multi-tasked environment
  9. Writes reports proficiently as directed
  10. Performs other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications
  1. Must possess a high school degree/GED or higher with Natural Resources experience
  2. Must have valid WA Boaters Certification and have completed the U.S Power Squadron training or equivalent within the 6 month probationary period
  3. Must have demonstrated experience and knowledge of marine and freshwater ecosystems
  4. Must have demonstrated knowledge of Microsoft Office programs
  5. Must have the ability to communicate information verbally and in written form in clear, concise, accurate and professional manner
  6. Must have excellent record-keeping and organizational skills
  7. Must be able to maintain confidentiality of information received orally, through data collection or in document handling
  8. Must be able to display positive acceptance of multi-tasking environment with regular interruptions, and accomplish tasks on-time and correctly
  9. Must be able to work independently with little supervision
  10. Initiate and maintain positive, respectful working relationships with all Tribal staff to foster a team environment. Initiate and maintain a positive working relationship with all outside organizations
  11. Possess a cooperative attitude, a professional manner, and have the ability to maintain confidentiality
  12. Must have a valid driver’s license and be able to meet the minimum insurance requirements regarding driving record in order to utilize GSA vehicles
  13. Must be able to meet the physical demands for active field work
  14. Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds

Working Conditions

Physical Demands: Frequent walking, hiking, standing (40% of time); Frequent bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, lifting, carrying, and pushing (30% of time); Regular periods of sitting, including driving (30% of time). Regularly lifts/carries up to 50lbs. Must possess manual dexterity sufficient to use office and field equipment with frequent repetitive motion such as writing, typing, paperwork-handling, and phone use. Must be able to physically utilize vehicles and water vessels of various sizes including boats, kayaks, or zodiacs. Mental/Visual Demands: Frequent mental and/or visual attention to task is required. Occasionally work requires heavy concentration. Frequent interruptions. Tasks involve eye-hand coordination. Working Environment: Work environment is mainly outdoors with various elements and inclement weather including wind, rain, sleet, cold, and heat. Unavoidable hazards/risks: Work requires frequent vehicular travel and frequent field work including land and bodies of water. May handle chemicals, solutions, and samples on a regular basis. Protective equipment and clothing may be required (goggles, gloves, masks, boots, PFDs, etc.)
