Description

The Xws7ámeshqen Teacher and Program Coordinator is responsible for learning and disseminating Xws7ámeshqen, creating curriculum and learning materials, and researching Xws7ámeshqen to increase knowledge and improve curriculum. This position supports the Xws7ámeshqen Program by managing the administrative work related to planning, directing, and coordinating the operational activities of the program. The Xws7ámeshqen Teacher and Program Coordinator is responsible for ensuring Xws7ámeshqen program goals are met and operations are running smoothly.

Principle Duties
  1. Learns and disseminates Xws7ámeshqen.
  2. Teaches Xws7ámeshqen in a variety of settings (including in-person or virtual classes) and to a varied audience (such as young children, adults, elders, novices, and intermediate learners).
  3. Supports the Chelángen and Xws7ámeshqen Director and other team members by providing program administrative details, developing reports relevant to ongoing language projects, and implementing new projects, policies, and procedures, program purchasing, and designing public relations opportunities.
  4. Increase knowledge of Straits Salish languages and Xws7ámeshqen to improve curriculum and language learning resources.
  5. Works with Xws7ámeshqen Multimedia Specialist in creation of language resources.
  6. Works in collaboration with the Cultural Committee to plan, organize, and execute events, gatherings, and classes.
  7. Provides support and information to program staff and other tribal employees on a variety of issues related to the Xws7ámeshqen Program.
  8. Identifies educational opportunities for the professional development of program staff.
  9. Resolves administrative issues by analyzing information and identifying and communicating solutions.
  10. Researches, develops, writes, and submits grants for the language program with oversight from the Chelángen and Xws7ámeshqen Director.
  11. Maintains the administrative records of the program and manages the program’s electronic file systems.
  12. Attends necessary Samish internal trainings as well as external trainings as approved by supervisor.
  13. Works in collaboration with other Coast Salish language tribes, teachers and/or programs.
  14. Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
  1. Bachelor’s degree in language/linguistics, Native American studies, teaching, or related field, or administrative work experience with a native language program, tribal government, or other relevant organization.
  2. Must be an enrolled Samish tribal citizen or descendant.
  3. Prior experience managing budgets and preparing reports.
  4. Strong computer skills including creating spreadsheets, presentations, and other public relations materials.
  5. Ability to effectively communicate, both verbally and in writing.
  6. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret program documents.
  7. Strong administrative writing skills and organizational skills.
  8. Ability to relate effectively with people from diverse backgrounds.
  9. Excellent communication skills and the ability to be professional when dealing with all aspects of the Xws7ámeshqen Program.
  10. Ability to make timely decisions that produce positive results through effective program planning, development, implementation, and evaluation.
  11. Ability to work independently and to be organized to ensure that tasks are completed in a timely manner.
  12. Possession of or the ability to obtain the necessary documents (Samish enhanced Real ID, passport or Washington State enhanced driver’s license) to travel between USA & Canada without restrictions within 6-8 weeks of hire.
Working Conditions

Physical Demands: Frequent periods of sitting, including driving (60% of time); occasional bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, lifting, carrying, and pushing (20% of time); and occasional standing and walking (20% of time). Occasionally lifts/carries up to 20 lbs. Must possess manual dexterity sufficient to use office equipment with frequent repetitive motion such as writing, typing, and phone use. Must possess the ability to view print on a computer screen and/or paper document; the ability to speak and hear exchanging information with end users by telephone. Mental/Visual Demands: Frequent mental and/or visual attention to task is required. Occasionally work requires heavy concentration. Frequent interruptions. Tasks involve eye-hand coordination.  Working Environment: Work environment is mainly indoors with heat and some air conditioning. Working environment may vary day to day. Sometimes works alone without benefit of supervisor or co-worker. Unavoidable hazards/risks: Work requires minimal risks which require safety precautions (using some cleaning chemicals for light cleaning). Protective clothing or equipment may be required (goggles, gloves, masks, boots, etc.)
